After we now have our clients installed using any of the methods explained in part 4 , we can finally use our SCCM to make our life easier ….let’s do application deployment !!
At a very high level with 2007 packages we put a bunch of files on the client then told the operating system to execute a command line. The application model is much more elegant. This model allows for user-centric deployments of applications, much better monitoring.
Applications can utilize the new approval request feature. This is the feature that allows the administrator to deploy applications to a wider user base, while still maintaining license control.
When we deploy the application, we can require the user to request approval to install the application, or we can allow the installation at will, we will be deploying a sample application to the user and this application won’t install unless the SCCM administrator/approver approves it.
From the Software Library, Expand Application Management Right click Applications and select Create Application.
Select automatically detect information, choose the type as Windows Installer (Native), specify the location of 7zip.msi file.
Enter the information about the application and choose the Install behavior as Install for User and click Next and complete the App creation wizard.
Note: Application Catalog contains only the applications deployed to users.
Now we will deploy the application to a user collection. Select the application and click Deploy.
Select the All Users Collection, enable the Automatically Distribute content for dependencies option. Click Next
Click in Add and choose your distribution point. Click Next.
Select Action as “Install” and Purpose as “Available“.
From the Client Machine Launch the Software Center and click on Find additional applications from the Application Catalog.
When you click Application Catalog, Click Request.
In the Request Approval Form the user can type Request justification, Click SUBMIT.
In the My Application Requests, the user can see Details of each requested application
Now it is the Admin/Approver Turn, under software Library, Expand Application management, Click Approval Requests.
We now see the request submitted by the user, Right Click and Select Approve.
You can write comment in case of approval or Denial too, click OK
Back to our Client, the Application is now Approved
No we have the application installed
