There are two deployment type for software updates using SCCM 2012 R2 (Manual and Automatic). In Manual software updates deployment, a set of software updates is selected from Configuration Manager Console and these updates are deployed to the target collection and Automatic software updates deployment is configured by using automatic deployment rules
First we will install the Software Update Point role. From the Configuration Manager Console, open the Administration workspace, expand Overview, click Site Configuration, and Select on Sites. At the top ribbon click on Add Site System Roles.
On the Add Site System Roles Wizard click Next.
Add the Needed proxy setting Click Next.
Select the Software Update Point and click Next.
We will be having BITS running on port 80 so we will change it
Enable the Usage of the Proxy server setting, enable Use credentials to connect to the WSUS server, click on Set and choose the account. And click Next.
Select Synchronize from Microsoft Update and click Next.
Enable synchronization on a schedule and Select the Alert when sync fails on any site in hierarchy. Click Next.
Select Immediately expire a superseded software update. Click Next.
Select Critical Updates and Security Updates. Click Next.
We can add or remove Update Classifications after installation of SUP
Choose the products that you want to synchronize. Click Next.
We will leave only English language, click Next.
Click Software Library, Expand Software Updates, click All Software Updates and click Synchronize Software Updates.
We can check the wsyncmgr.log and WCM.log to make sure everything is working fine
We will filter the updates by adding criteria. Click on Add criteria. Select Expired, Product, Title Click Add. Choose the product as Windows 7, Title contains the word Security, Expired set as NO.
Right click on the updates and click Create Software Update Group.
Fill the name Test Software Update group. Click Create
We will create collection contain only two machines named “Test collection” for testing software updates deployment.
Right click on the Software Update Group that we created and click Deploy.
We will select the collection that we just created
Set the Type of deployment as Required and. Click Next.
Choose Software available time to specific time and set the Installation deadline to as soon as possible. Click Next.
You can choose to suppress the restart for Server or Workstations. Click Next.
Select Download software updates from distribution point and install. Click Next.
Provide the Package name, location, Package source and Sending priority. Click Next.
Click Add and select the disruption point. Click Next.
For Download Location select Download software updates from the Internet. Click Next.
We see here that the content is downloaded and distributes successfully to the distribution point .
After a while we can see the updates installed on the client.
It didn’t restart and only notified the user that restart is required, but we can always force the restart on the deadline date.
